Friends of BCAS - Weekly Email 9/23/11

Below is the contents of the weekly Adoptions & Newsletter email sent out on 9/23/11.

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

Please spare a moment to read the following announcements:

PET EXPO: Volunteers, we'll be set up at the 6th Annual Burlington County Pet Expo (by the library main branch on Oct. 1st from 11-4). We will not be bringing shelter pets out this time, but we'd love for you to come with your own animals and show people just how great adopted/rescued pets can be :) Our fellow volunteer Barbara ( barbaramoosathome@verizon.net ) is organizing our table at the Pet Expo, so let her know if you can come!

CINNAMINSON APPRECIATION DAY: Our volunteer Jean is setting up a table for Friends of BCAS at Cinnaminson Appreciation Day on October 23rd and she's asking for volunteers to help man the table and hand out information about our program. We will not have shelter animals at this event, but please feel free to bring your own adopted pet out! Interested volunteers should email Jean at zagnut1@aol.com.

DOG GROOMING ASSISTANT: Our volunteer dog groomer, Nancy, is looking for some help handling the Yellow-rated dogs (such as Star, Blaze, etc) for grooming. Interested Yellow walkers should look for Nancy in the shelter's grooming room around 5:30 PM on Mondays or email her at NACJ326@aol.com.

CAT TOY DONATIONS: The kitties are still on lockdown due to distemper in the shelter, so while they can't come out to play with us volunteers, they should at least get toys every day! Ideal toys are easily washable, such as plastic balls and other things that can just be dunked in cleaner. Want to make some toys instead of buying them? Check out our list of suggestions for DIY animal toys: http://fobcas.blogspot.com/2011/02/do-it-yourself-donations.html

DASH'S SUCCESS STORY:
Dash was one of many pit bull mixes who found themselves at the shelter this past July. Dash was a sweet thing and the volunteers liked her, but she was unfortunately involved in a bite incident and the shelter's policy is not to adopt bite incident dogs out, only transfer them to willing rescues, which can often be very difficult to find. Fortunately for Dash, one of our awesome volunteers, Tammy, decided to advocate for Dash's life and successfully got her transferred to Sweet Bark Pit Bull Rescue, where she is now in a foster home who loves her!
Dash's foster home has this to say about her:
"She has been a wonderful addition to our family and we are thrilled to foster her. I have taken her to several pet events and she is extremely calm and social. We even had her at the local pool event last Sunday with all our neighbors and their dogs. It took a couple of weeks for her to adjust from being in the shelter; she was confused and very frustrated when we first brought her home. In a short time, she is mastering her basic commands, walking with a leash and just being happy all around and extremely affectionate. She even attends doggy day care and loves to play with my dogs in the backyard."
