Cat of the Week! | C-39201 Isabel

This very friendly kitty is a cuddler who loves to be held and petted. She did a lot of purring and rolling over during my visit, trying her best to get my attention.

She is a very pretty cat with calico-colored medium/long fur, and she may have some Persian in her as well, given her cute little squished-looking face.

She is medium-sized, is estimated to be about 3-5 years old, and would simply love for you to come visit her!

If you're looking for a cat to snuggle up with and hold, this may be the cutie for you. Please consider adopting this deserving lady.

Please refer to her number C-39201 when contacting the shelter at 609-265-5073.

Friends of BCAS Attends 4th Annual Explorer/Junior Firefighter Competition

It was a gorgeous day on the 21st of May; not a cloud in the sky (in the beginning, anyway) as we set up our table at the
4th Annual Explorer/Junior Firefighter Competition.

We are the Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter, and we were offered a display spot at the competition to promote our program and the shelter animals!

Why Should You Adopt An Older Cat

We adopted our first kitten from a friend 2 years ago. She lives on a farm and unfortunately someone dumped a pregnant cat on her property. Thankfully, my friend found the cat and was able to find homes for all her kittens. My friend got the mom spayed and adopted her and one of her kittens! Our second kitten we rescued from a no kill shelter. While I was there I saw all the older cats waiting for a home. The people at the shelter encouraged me to adopt an older cat but I had my mind set on a kitten. We brought a kitten home and she is great. Then a funny thing happened. My son found a stray cat while playing outside. He was a super friendly cat and was very hungry. We continued to feed him while I looked for his owners. We never found the owners and so the cat became ours! I was amazed at what a great cat he is. Now I understood what the shelter was talking about! Why didn't I listen??

Cat of the Week! | C-39351 Ellie

This cat is such a gentle little sweetheart. She's a quiet, calm little 1-2 year old who will happily purr and rub on you when her soft fur is petted. She's been described as "precious" and "delicate", and simply seems like a very nice, low-energy kitty. She is interested in the world and does enjoy playing, but I think she just likes affection more. She seems like the type of cat who'd enjoy a lap or a sunny windowsill. She's got short, mostly white fur with black patches, and pretty, pale green eyes. Please come pay this sweetie a visit. She's still waiting for her loving forever home. She is located at the Burlington County Animal Shelter, Mount Holly, NJ. 609-265-5073 Please refer to this girl's ID # C-39351 if interested.

Dog Walking Party 5/14/11

On Saturday, May 14th 2011, we had an awesome volunteer dog walking party at the shelter. We met our goal of getting all the 60 or so walkable dogs walked, and we did it in under four hours with only a dozen volunteers! (And then we had tasty snacks as a reward. Mmm-mmm.) Huge thanks go to all the volunteers who helped make this happen! I hope we can repeat this experience many times in the future :)

Even though I brought my camera to the event, I was so distracted with actually walking dogs that I completely forgot to get any pictures of it. I won't be so thoughtless next time, I promise.

We're planning on having a volunteer cat party in mid-June, so if you're not already a volunteer, attend an orientation (at the shelter every Thursday at 6 PM, first Saturday each month at 11 AM) and come have some fun with us! Not only do you get to make cats happy by giving them a break out of their cages, you get to meet your fellow cat-loving volunteers AND share some snacks together! I hope to see you there :D

April 2011 Volunteer Newsletter - 05/09/2011

The following was written by Penny, one of Friends of BCAS's coordinators, as the fourth monthly email to our volunteers.

Fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers,

Our number of volunteer visits to the shelter and volunteers hours decreased compared to the prior month.  In March we had 161 visits and 245 volunteer hours.  In April, we had 146 visits and 239 volunteer hours. That's a (9.4%) and (2.2%) decrease respectively.  (Please remember to sign in & out when you are at the shelter, so our statistics can be as accurate as possible.)

With the decline in volunteer visits & hours, we are falling short of getting the cats and dogs out of their kennels at least once a week.  We realize the weather is beautiful and everyone has yard work, spring cleaning and barbecues to attend, but please try to find some time to bring a little joy to the animals at the shelter.
