Friends of BCAS - Weekly Email 8/18/11

Below is the contents of the weekly Adoptions & Newsletter email sent out on 8/18/11.

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

Please spare a moment to read the following announcements:

Help us understand you, our volunteer base, by doing this 6-question survey by the end of August, and get chance to win a free Friends of BCAS t-shirt! All feedback is very welcome, but we'd especially love to hear from our non-participating volunteers. You can answer anonymously!

IMPORTANT NOTICE for CAT VOLUNTEERS: As of 8/18/11, the cat volunteer program has been temporarily suspended due to the discovery of panleukopenia in some of the shelter cats, including a couple in the Adoptable room. Panleukopenia, aka feline distemper, is highly contagious and potentially deadly to cats (but not humans) and is highly transmissible through physical contact, so it is critical to limit handling of the cats as much as possible until the threat is gone. You can still visit with the cats, but you can not handle or pet them. You'll be notified as soon as it's safe to play with the kitties again! Thank you for understanding :)

END OF NJ'S 7-DAY HOLDING LAW?: New Jersey's bill S2923 will allow shelters to start euthanizing some animals before the currently-mandated 7-day holding period. This bill becomes law on August 25th unless it's vetoed. Learn more about the bill and read the bill itself here: http://onlovinganimals.blogspot.com/2011/08/s2923-new-jersey-end-of-7-day-holding.html. Sign a petition to end the bill here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-nj-from-euthanizing-shelter-pets-before-7-days/

DOG GROOMING ASSISTANT: Our volunteer dog groomer, Nancy, is looking for some help handling the Yellow-rated dogs (such as Mia, Star, Blaze, etc) for grooming. Interested Yellow walkers should look for Nancy in the shelter's grooming room around 5:30 PM on Mondays or email her at NACJ326@aol.com.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: If you're looking for more ways to help out, here's a partial list of things you can do: http://fobcas.blogspot.com/p/volunteer-opportunities.html

VOTE FOR OUR SHELTER: The Animal Rescue Site is giving away thousands of dollars in grants to shelters with the highest votes here: http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/shelterchallenge.faces?siteId=3 - Help us have a chance to win the grand prize of a $5000.00 grant by clicking the link, searching for Burlington County Animal Shelter, and voting for us!
