We NEED help with the following:
  • Fund-raising committee: We need folks for our fund-raising committee.  The committee will organize and hold various fundraisers, i.e. bake sales, money collection stations, etc.  We could benefit the animals more if we had some money to buy collars, advanced medical care, etc.
  • Promote a dog and cat of the month: Someone to creatively decorate the dog and/or cat's kennel to draw attention to the animal.  We will also provide give-a-ways to the adopter, i.e. bag of food, collar, toys, etc.  Please contact Penny at fobcas@yahoo.com if you want to facilitate the dog and/or cat every month.
  • Can you sell ice to an Eskimo? We need folks willing to contact local pet groomers, dog trainers, pet supply stores requesting donations or discounts for their services.  To help with the 'Pet of the Month' program, it would be nice if we could offer the adopters free and/or discounted grooming, training, supplies, etc. for their new pet.  This could be a win-win for us and the company donating their services/supplies. If interested, contact Penny at fobcas@yahoo.com.

Bow wow items:
  • When think you are ready to become a 'yellow' dog walker, please schedule an evaluation appointment with John (jrichardson@co.burlington.nj.us) or Lisa (lcliver@co.burlington.nj.us) in advance.  Please keep in mind most 'yellow' dogs are strong and undisciplined on a leash, so you'll need strength, confidence and patience to walk these dogs.
  • Upcoming dog handling classes:  'Handling Sasha' - basic handling skills on 6/20/11 @ 6:00pm.  Email Penny if you would like to attend: fobcas@yahoo.com
  • Missing slip leads:  Please remember to return the slip leads to the volunteer cabinet before you leave the shelter.
  • Dog groomers: We are still in need for volunteers to groom and/or help out with grooming the dogs.  We are allowed to groom/bathe dogs in the clinic room on Monday & Thursday evenings from 5:00pm - 7:00pm.  If you are interested in helping a dog look and smell wonderful, contact Nancy Jones: NACJ326@aol.com.

Meow items:
  • Reminder Cat Party on 6/11/11: We are having a cat party on 6/11/11 in the conference room at the shelter.  We'll socialize with cats & other volunteers beginning at 11:00am.  RSVP to Penny at fobcas@yahoo.com.
  • Kitten fostering needed: Numerous kittens are coming into the shelter this time of year.  We need volunteers willing to foster kittens.  If you are willing help out these adorable kittens, please contact Linda: lindazaccaria@comcast.net.
  • Cat Grooming: If you notice a cat who needs grooming, i.e. nails clipped, matting, etc. please contact Penny and/or Jenn.  We will coordinate the grooming with Barb.

Reminder: Volunteer t-shirts are now available! They cost $10 and come in a variety of colors. They have Friends of BCAS's name and email, a cute logo, and "Volunteers CAN make a difference" on them. Our fellow volunteer Barb designed and ordered these t-shirts, so email her at barbaramoosathome@yahoo.com if you'd like your own!

Our number of volunteer visits to the shelter decreased and volunteers hours increased compared to the prior month.  In April we had 146 visits and 239 volunteer hours.  In May, we had 142 visits and 253 volunteer hours. That's a 2.7% decrease and 5.8% increase respectively.  Please make some time to come to the shelter!!
Our dedication and compassion can make the shelter a distant memory for animals we help get adopted!
Thank you all,

Penny & Jenn
