Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

Please spare a moment to read the following announcements:

• ORIENTATION CHANGE: Starting in OCTOBER, cat orientation classes will be separate from general/dog orientation, and will be every Monday at 6 PM. The monthly Saturday classes will be for dogs only, after the switch. The first cat orientation class is on 10/3! Potential cat volunteers who cannot attend a Monday class should email Jenn at jennak87@yahoo.com to discuss alternatives.

• BRING YOUR DOG OUT FOR SOME FUN: Friends of BCAS will be set up at the 6th Annual Burlington County Pet Expo (by the library main branch on Saturday, Oct. 1st). We'll be showing our own personal adopted animals this time around, so let our organizer Barbara ( barbaramoosathome@verizon.net ) know if you and your pet can come out even for an hour to sit with us and show the world how great an adopted pet can be! We also need people to come to help set up (10:30 AM) and pack up (4 PM).

• CAT VOLUNTEER UPDATE: I have happy news! UNLESS the shelter finds another case of distemper in the next few days (nothing's been found for over a week now), the cat program will resume this coming Monday, Oct. 3rd after over six weeks of quarantine! Let's hope it remains safe so we can give our cats a much-needed break soon! I will send out an email on Monday with the final word on the quarantine as soon as I know.

• PET EXPO: Volunteers, we'll be set up at the 6th Annual Burlington County Pet Expo (by the library main branch on Oct. 1^st from 11-4). We will not be bringing shelter pets out this time, but we'd love for you to come with your own animals and show people just how great adopted/rescued pets can be :) Our fellow volunteer Barbara ( barbaramoosathome@verizon.net ) is organizing our table at the Pet Expo, so let her know if you can come!

• CINNAMINSON APPRECIATION DAY: Our volunteer Jean is setting up a table for Friends of BCAS at Cinnaminson Appreciation Day on October 23rd and she's asking for volunteers to help man the table and hand out information about our program. We will not have shelter animals at this event, but please feel free to bring your own adopted pet out! Interested volunteers should email Jean at zagnut1@aol.com.

• DOG GROOMING ASSISTANT: Our volunteer dog groomer, Nancy, is looking for some help handling the Yellow-rated dogs (such as Star, Blaze, etc) for grooming. Interested Yellow walkers should look for Nancy in the shelter's grooming room around 5:30 PM on Mondays or email her at NACJ326@aol.com.

• CAT TOY DONATIONS: The kitties are still on lockdown due to distemper in the shelter, so while they can't come out to play with us volunteers, they should at least get toys every day! Ideal toys are easily washable, such as plastic balls and other things that can just be dunked in cleaner. Want to make some toys instead of buying them? Volunteer Stats for August 2011:

- Volunteer hours: 364.75 (-17% from July)

- Volunteer visits: 223 (-13% from July)

- Total volunteer participation: 31%

Note: Our cat socialization program was temporarily suspended as of 8/18/11 which had a negative impact on our stats.

Giant thanks to the following volunteers:

- Betty Konrad for 19 visits in August walking dogs through the rain drops. A couple of her favorite doggies got adopted or went to a rescue.

- Tammy Grant for stepping up to the plate as a leader for our program. Tammy has been doing a great job conducting our orientation classes (giving Penny a much-needed break)!! She also puts in an enormous amount of time at the shelter walking dogs... big, strong dogs who almost outweigh her. And there's more, she spends countless hours helping manage our Facebook page. Her passion and compassion for the animals is contagious :o)

Volunteers are not paid - not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.

• PET EXPO: Volunteers, we'll be set up at the 6th Annual Burlington County Pet Expo (by the library main branch on Oct. 1st). We will not be bringing shelter pets out this time, but we'd love for you to come with your own animals and show people just how great adopted/rescued pets can be :) Our fellow volunteer Barbara ( barbaramoosathome@verizon.net ) is organizing our table at the Pet Expo, so let her know if you can come!

• POSTING/PHOTOGRAPHY ASSISTANTS: We're looking for people to help our volunteer posters by handling the animals so they can be photographed. Our volunteer posters work diligently every week to make sure ALL the shelter's adoptable animals are listed online. Our posters are usually at the shelter on Monday and Thursday evenings, and on Saturdays. We need Yellow Dog Walkers more than anything, so if you're interested in helping out or have questions, please email Jenn at jennak87@yahoo.com.

• CAT UPDATE: The volunteer cat program is still under suspension, as distemper is even still being found here and there in the shelter. Let's just keep our fingers crossed for our feline friends.

• BURL.CO. PET EXPO: The 6^th Annual Burlington County Pet Expo will be held near the Burlington County Library on the 1^st of October, 2011. The shelter and volunteers, and tons of other animal organizations will be there, so save the date! Our fellow volunteer Barbara ( barbaramoosathome@verizon.net ) will be organizing our presence there, so let her know if you can help out. Further volunteer details are pending.

• BCAS KITTENS STILL NEED HELP: At last count, the shelter still has TEN LITTERS of bottle-feeder kittens. That is an overwhelming amount, and the staff is unable to handle it on top of their regular duties (while still remaining sane). Fosters are needed more than ever! Please contact the shelter directly at 609-265-5842 if you are able to foster kittens, and spread the word about this need! • HELP HEARTWORM-POSITIVE SOFTIE: Softie (D-43271), a gorgeous shepherd mix at BCAS, has tested positive for heartworm. Heartworm treatment is expensive and the shelter's funds are very limited, so it's up to us animal advocates to help out. The Burlington County Animal Alliance frequently takes care of special medical cases such as this when the shelter cannot, so please consider donating to BCAA (http://www.bcaaofnj.org) for Softie's heartworm treatment!

• DOG HANDLING CLASS: Animal Advocate John will be holding his next Yellow Dog Handling Class on Thursday, September 1st at 6 PM. Volunteers, come learn about handling potentially difficult dogs, and become approved to walk Yellow-rated shelter dogs!

• THREE WAYS TO HELP A SHELTER KITTEN!:

   1) The shelter is always overflowing with cats and kittens, but now is a critical time for them, especially the kittens, as they are particularly vulnerable to the distemper running through the shelter. The shelter always needs kitten fosters, including for kittens who must still be bottle-fed. People with a serious interest in fostering shelter felines should contact the shelter directly at 609-265-5842.

2) There are currently a few cute but undersocialized and hissy kittens at the shelter who could use extra TLC and handling to help them become adoptable. To help with these babies, contact Vet Tech Sue Nocito either by email at susanenocito@comcast.net or by calling the shelter at 609-265-5842 and asking for her.

3) PetValu in Mt. Holly and Precious Pets in Burlington both house adoptable cats and kittens who have been rescued from BCAS. As soon as these kitties are adopted, more cats and kittens can be pulled from BCAS, freeing up all-important cage space for more felines! Spread the word about these adoptable cuties!

• IMPORTANT NOTICE for CAT VOLUNTEERS: As of 8/18/11, the cat volunteer program has been temporarily suspended due to the discovery of panleukopenia in some of the shelter cats, including a couple in the Adoptable room. Panleukopenia, aka feline distemper, is highly contagious and potentially deadly to cats (but not humans) and is highly transmissible through physical contact, so it is critical to limit handling of the cats as much as possible until the threat is gone. You can still visit with the cats, but you can not handle or pet them. You'll be notified as soon as it's safe to play with the kitties again! Thank you for understanding :)

• END OF NJ'S 7-DAY HOLDING LAW?: New Jersey's bill S2923 will allow shelters to start euthanizing some animals before the currently-mandated 7-day holding period. This bill becomes law on August 25th unless it's vetoed. Volunteer Stats for July 2011:

- Volunteer visits: 257 (+24% from June)

*Note: Several volunteers were removed from the database due to non-participation during the 2nd quarter (April-June).

Giant thanks to the following volunteers:

- Delano Byrd for 15 visits in July giving our cats some much needed attention.

- Carol Ingham for 16 visits in July to walk our smaller, adorable dogs.

- Brian Skelly walked dogs for over 24 hours in July. Brian handles our bigger babies, especially those in the back/yellow section.

- Our new sisterly dynamic duo, Jean Stone & Mary Porter. Jean posts our dogs on Craigslist, giving us another avenue to find adopters. She also promotes our volunteer program to anyone willing to listen!! Mary is doing an amazing job taking dog pics and posting them online.

- Terry & Brian Walsh, Judy Witt, Jane Pratt, Pat & John MacRonald, Nancy Call and Andrea & David Ferrare, thanks for participating at the Dog Days event on 7/30/11.

Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action. These actions shape and mold the present into a future of which we can all be proud.

• Over 20 dogs were adopted last week! In response, here is part of an email that Animal Advocate John sent to his fellow shelter workers and the volunteer coordinators, praising everybody's great work: "Great job all around! Having more people helping with the website so that animals appear more quickly is a help. It's a huge and important job. Just an example of HOW important the website is: An owner in the military who is doing a stint in Europe spotted HIS dog on the website and told the person supposedly taking care of the dog to get straight to the shelter to reclaim, which they did just yesterday. How would that have happened in pre-internet days? It wouldn't! The volunteers working with the cats and dogs have also made a clear difference in how well the animals are showing. Thanks, guys!"

• REMINDER: Dog walkers, due to the heat, dogs may not be walked until Monday the 25th. Once walking resumes, please respect the heat this summer and do not run or overwork your dog in hot weather. Don't forget, there is a doggy pool in the yard that you may use if your dog likes to swim! If somebody sends me pictures of their shelter dog having fun in the pool, I'll be glad to include them in the next newsletter!

Hey there volunteers,

Here are a few extra announcements I neglected to include in this past week's newsletter:

• Wonderful News! In four days this week (7/11-7/14), we had 54 volunteer visits to the shelter. That is incredible! For those of you making time for the animals, THANK YOU!!!

• Volunteer Dog Walker Notices:
    - Please avoid running the dogs on hot days, as it can become a health hazard for the dogs.
    - Be cautious about running with the dogs in general, and be certain that you have complete control of the dog at all times. You are running the dog, the dog should not be running you!
    - If your dog starts biting at its leash and does not stop when corrected, return the dog to its kennel immediately. Leash biting may appear playful at first, but it can quickly get out of hand as the dog bites further up the leash towards your hands. A bite incident, even an accidental one, is one of the worst things that can happen for a shelter dog. Please make sure to report leash biting behavior to Animal Advocates John or Lisa so that the behavior can be worked on.

• IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CAT VOLUNTEERS: Preventing cat cross-contamination is now more important than ever: There is a new, antibiotic-resistant, highly contagious and deadly strain of the cat upper respiratory disease called Feline Calicivirus. The appearance of this disease at a Virginia shelter resulted in the euthanization of the shelter's entire cat population to prevent the disease's spread. Symptoms of this particular strain of Calicivirus include a very rapid onset of lethargy, sneezing, discharge from the eyes, and mouth sores. If you notice cats with ANY of these or other signs of illness, report it to shelter staff immediately, wash your hands, and do not let other cats touch anything the ill cat may have touched. • REMINDER: Contact the shelter to become a cat foster! Kittens especially benefit from being fostered until they're old enough to be adopted out, including orphaned kittens who need to be bottle-fed to survive.

• REMINDER: Yellow dog handlers: Please don't forget about the dogs in the back/Yellow section. The dogs back there don't get walked nearly as much as the others. Dog walkers, is there a particular reason you're avoiding that section? We'd love to know, so please email Penny at fobcas@yahoo.com with your feedback!

• REMINDER: Cat volunteers: Cats are being displayed in the lobby cages again, so please don't forget about them when it comes time to play. They need love too!

• NOTICE: Dog walkers: We are missing 3 out of 6 leashes. These leashes were donated by a volunteer, and we don't have the funds to keep buying replacements. Penny will place a bulk order of leashes for those volunteers who wish to purchase their own, so email her at fobcas@yahoo.com!

• EVENT: On July 30^th, the shelter will be having their "Dog Days of Summer" event, a 'pet expo' with lots of different animal organizations coming together to show their stuff! Save the date, because we're going to need volunteers to help with our table, bake things to sell, handle dogs, and anything the shelter needs help with! • EVENT: Donate to BCAA by having dinner! BCAA will be given 15% of each check from meals eaten on July 13^th from 3-9PM at the Red Lion Inn (101 Red Lion Road, Southampton, NJ 08088). The Burlington County Animal Alliance is an animal rescue and foster group, and is a strong supporter of BCAS & Friends. Help the homeless animals of Burlington County with a tasty dinner!

• EVENT: Please consider volunteering for BCAA's next Snip It Clinic for Cats this coming Sunday the 26^th in Browns Mills. You can volunteer for the morning shift (from 7 or 8 AM to noon) or afternoon shift (noon to finish). Please email Leila at leilam1065@aol.com to help out. The more cats we help get spayed or neutered, the less cats flood the shelter, and we need all the help we can get!

• REMINDER: LAST CALL for volunteers to help with Saturday's Dog Walk and Earth Fair, located in Eastampton's Historic Smithville Park! We'll be participating in a Dog Walk/Run at the park from 8-10 AM, then helping the shelter with their table at the Earth Fair from 10AM-2PM. We can still use a few more dog handlers and cat tenders! DOG HANDLERS MUST RSVP BY FRIDAY MORNING TO GET A DOG. RSVP to Jenn at jennak87@yahoo.com. Thank you!

• REMINDER: LAST CALL to attend the "Training Sasha" Beginners Dog Handling Class hosted by Animal Advocate John on 6/20/11 at 6:00pm. Space is limited and registration is required, so please RSVP to Penny at fobcas@yahoo.com.

• REMINDER: We are still looking for people to help us organize fundraising events and projects. It can be as simple as a bake sale or selling dog treats or trinkets at an already-existing event! Fundraisers help us buy things that help the shelter animals, like "Adopt Me" bandanas for the dogs, and better display cages for the cats. • ANNOUNCEMENT: On Sunday, June 19^th from 4-9PM, Pirone's Pizza, an Italian restaurant, will give %25 of every check to BCAA with the hand-in of a flyer! You can download the flyer from http://www.BCAAofNJ.org, or pick up a copy at the restaurant. Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

I know you're excited to see who got adopted this week (so many great animals found homes!), but please spare a moment to read the following announcements:

• NOTICE: Dog walkers, on these very hot summer days, please limit the amount of time you walk/exercise a dog to 10 minutes, and do not run your dog.

• REQUEST: To help the dogs combat the heat, we'd love to get a kiddie/doggy swimming pool out in the yard so the dogs can have a nice, refreshing bath! Please email Jenn at jennak87@yahoo.com if you have a doggy pool or a sturdy kiddie swimming pool you'd like to donate!

• REMINDER: Volunteers, please do not write on the animals' clipboard papers. Notes about the animal should only go on the orange Volunteer Sheet.

• REMINDER: Every Saturday from noon to 3, volunteers can take shelter dogs to the Mount Laurel Petsmart to show the dogs off and promote adoption! We still need volunteers to help with this! After contacting Lorraine, you'd pick your dog up at 11-11:30 AM, drive it over to the Petsmart after a little walk, hang out with fellow dog lovers and their dogs, and return your dog to the shelter by 3:30 PM! It's fun and easy. Please contact Lorraine at jajachris@aol.com to help out.

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

• EVENT: On Saturday, June 18^th, we will be helping the shelter participate in the annual Earth Fair at Historic Smithville Park in Eastampton, a 15-minute drive from the shelter. We'll need dog handlers, among other things. Further details are pending! Email Jenn at jennak87@yahoo.com if you might be interested in helping out!

• EVENT: New Advanced Dog Handling Class: Animal Advocate John is generously holding "Training Parker" Advanced Dog Handling classes for the Yellow dog volunteers to learn how to handle and teach difficult dogs like Parker, one of the shelter's longest residents. The first class is on June 6th at 6PM at the shelter. RSVP to Penny at fobcas@yahoo.com.

• REMINDER: When leaving notes on the orange Volunteer Activity Sheet, please keep in mind that potential adopters will be reading them and choose your words carefully when it comes to negative behavior. Words that have strong negative meanings, like "aggressive", should only be used in clear cases of animal attacks, which are different from rough play. Animals with behavioral problems you think may become dangerous should be reported to shelter staff.

• REMINDER: Don't forget, we have a Youtube channel featuring animals of the shelter! Show your friends, spread the word! Email Jenn at jennak87@yahoo.com for information on how to contribute videos.

• ANNOUNCEMENT: Volunteer t-shirts are now available! They cost $12 and come in a variety of colors. They have Friends of BCAS's name and email, a cute logo, and "Volunteers CAN make a difference" on them. Our fellow volunteer Barb designed and ordered these t-shirts, so email her at barbaramoosathome@yahoo.com if you'd like your own!
