Shelter Dogs Visiting New Jersey Petsmarts

• Petsmart Adoption Days!
Place: Petsmart, Centerton Square
62 Centerton Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054 US
Time: 12 PM - 3 PM, every Saturday!

Beginning on the 16th of April, 2011, the Burlington County Animal Shelter's volunteers will begin bringing adoptable shelter dogs to the Petsmart in Mount Laurel, NJ for customers to meet!

This is happening in cooperation with the rescue group Burlington County Animal Alliance (learn more about BCAA here), who has had regular Petsmart Adoption Days with their rescue dogs and cats for quite some time now! Thanks also go to Petsmart for allowing rescues and animal organizations to hold events such as these in their stores.

Last Saturday, the 16th, the Burlington County Animal Shelter sent two cute little bitty dogs to the Mount Laurel Petsmart to be shown off, and they're both already adopted :) We hope to expand to other Petsmart locations in the future, and to show off a variety of wonderful, adoptable dogs. For this to be a success, we need volunteers to transport and handle dogs, and members of the public to come visit us and make our efforts worthwhile!

March 2011 Volunteer Newsletter - 04/08/2011

The following was written by Penny, one of Friends of BCAS's coordinators, as the third monthly email to our volunteers.

Fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers,

Once again we are seeing the number of visits volunteers are making to the shelter and volunteer hours increase compared to the prior month, which is WONDERFUL!!  In February we had 106 visits and 176 volunteer hours.  In March, we had 161 visits and 245 volunteer hours. That's a 51% and 39% increase respectively.  (Please remember to sign in & out when you are at the shelter, so our statistics can be as accurate as possible.)

Those of you coming out to the shelter regularly know these statistics are not just numbers.  These statistics also represent purring cats and tail-wagging dogs.  It is a wonderful feeling when you approach a kennel and KNOW that cat or dog recognizes you :o)

I went through the shelter last Saturday, 4/2/11, and there were some dogs and cats who had not been out of their kennels for over two weeks.  Let's strive to get the dogs and cats out of their kennels at least once a week!!

Lost Pet Tips

Losing a pet can be a traumatic experience. I know well the feeling of concern, then confusion, then near-panic when I realized my 18-year-old mostly deaf indoor cat wasn't anywhere in the house. To this day I still have no idea how he could have gotten out; he had slowed down considerably in his old age, so somebody should have seen him go through the door. To make matters worse, the weather was supposed to be unseasonably cold and rainy that night, and I had no idea if my old ex-stray boy still had the skills to keep himself safe.

February 2011 Volunteer Newsletter - 03/02/2011

The following was written by Penny, one of Friends of BCAS's coordinators, as the second monthly email to our volunteers.

Fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers,

We've seen a big increase in the number of times volunteers are coming out to the shelter, so THANK YOU!!  In January we had 57 visits to the shelter by our volunteers.  In February we had 106 visits.  That's an 86% increase with 3 less days in February.  An extra note of gratitude to:

Christian DiPonziano - over 12 hours playing with cats in February
Bernie O'Keefe - over 7 hours walking dogs in February and Bernie did not become a volunteer until 2/10

Do-It-Yourself Donatables

Shelters are always grateful for donations of animal supplies, but some of those who wish to help are unable or unwilling to outright purchase these items for donation. That's why Do It Yourself projects are so great! Below is a compilation of DIY projects for cat and dog toys and other items. The projects range from cheap and easy to time-consuming and difficult, but even if you stick to the easiest project, our shelter will appreciate your donation!

You can find the standard shelter donation wishlist here:

Recent Adoptions from BCAS - late January 2011

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

We thought you'd like to see some of the wonderful animals that were adopted most recently! Your efforts help the animals to stay calm and sane, and this makes them so much more attractive to potential adopters. We truly appreciate the time you put in, and we know the animals do too.

Maybe you recognize some of these lucky adopted or rescued cats and dogs?

January 2011 Volunteer Newsletter - 02/01/11

The following was written by Penny, one of Friends of BCAS's coordinators, as the first monthly email to our volunteers.

Friends of BCAS volunteers,

The weather has been awful so far this winter, so we truly appreciate those of you who have been coming out to the shelter to warm an animal's heart.  If you have not been able to come out to the shelter, please try to find some time in your schedule.  We know the animals enjoy your visits.  We are beginning to see the volunteer program impact the number of animals finding homes vs. the alternative none of us likes to think about.
